Looks like it has an interesting mix of academic/parental pressure, struggles against classism, sexism, & racism, magical realism/fantasy, and possibly the beginnings of a rivals-to-lovers romance. It seems to gave good Chinese American representation that is realistic and accurate. Although, it is a little odd that the brief instanced mandarin pinyin are done without tone markings. It’s not a problem, it just seems a little odd. The character writing is clearly quite good right off the bat and I can immediately relate to this main character that’s drowning under pressure and feeling (figuratively) invisible… and then ends up actually becoming (literally) invisible.
