I love a family story, especially one set in the South. This book was at first a little hard to follow on audio with all the different family members, but quickly came together as I listened. The cast of characters is large, but once you get to know the family, the story flows. If the print version doesn't have a family tree somewhere in there, it really should!

The story starts with the passing of the family patriarch, and ensuing revelations at his funeral. I loved the Williams family and their quirks and secrets. The grieving matriarch was an understated but realistic portrait of loneliness, even within her large family. This book, like so much Southern fiction, captures the tragedy and comedy of family life, with hope woven through. There are moments that made me laugh out loud, but also cringy moments and many moments of tenderness.
