I found the First Look of If We’re Being Honest by Cat Shook interesting, but a little hard to follow. It is a well-written story and engaging, but there were just so many characters. It became a distraction keeping track of them all, so much so that I had to write them down.
A revelation at the family patriarch’s funeral should have shocked relatives out of their own self-absorption, but instead seemed to intensify their own emotional preoccupation. Yet, the gathering felt familiar and very relatable, the banter authentic. When families get together for any reason there is bound to be drama, and this First Look suggests that there is plenty. It is difficult to determine whether a book is for you based on a brief number of pages, but I would be interested in learning more, and capturing the attention of the audience is exactly the goal of any author. My rating is three stars for now until I can read more.
