If We're Being Honest is a funny and insightful look at a relatably troubled family as they mourn the loss of their grandfather/father/husband. The narration is dripping with a fun and irreverent tone that explores the thoughts and feelings of the many characters as they deal with each other, the loss of their grandfather, a surprising revelation at the funeral, and reconnecting with people from their hometown. No character is safe from the narrator's critical wit, as they all have some, typically relatable, personal issues that disqualify them from giving the eulogy and make it tough for them to focus on all of the drama that quickly surrounds the family after the funeral.

Cat Shook demonstrates a real talent for characterization. Each member of the family feel unique and familiarly flawed. With so many characters, introduced so quickly, Shook does a great job of establishing the difference and relationships in a manner that makes them distinguishable. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an engaging, funny read about family drama.
