I have to admit that I am immediately put off when a book begins with either a map or a family tree. To me it feels like the author is just telling you there is no way you will be able to keep track of the story without this information. And right away there is just an onslaught of characters, which turned me off. Family dramas are not my genre though, so that could be the issue.
