Shook is so good at making her characters distinguishable. It's a lot of characters to remember at once, but because they are so distinct, it's not hard to recognize who is who. I feel like if I gave Shook a situation to write the cast in, she'd know exactly how everyone would act. She knows how to balance the serious and funny parts nicely, like the bomb Fred dropped at Gerry's funeral. Even though it was super shocking to read, it was so shocking I laughed in disbelief. Like Ellen thought his speech was gonna get better and Fred shuts that down.

This story is right up my alley. I love books that focus on large families and their problems because there's lots of drama and touching moments, which I can tell is in this story. I like the cover. It catches your attention because it's bright, which is so different from the events in the story.
