All in the Family

Reminiscent of the 2007 film “Death at a Funeral”, a devastating bombshell is dropped when the Williams family get ready to bury their patriarch, Gerald Williams. An old friend turns out to be more than that and the family must deal with the fallout.

The opening chapters hold their share of unease, stifled hilarity, social posturing and awkwardness that have nothing to do with the eulogy. Surprisingly little is said about the extraordinary revelation. Instead, the family is caught up in their own individual dramas. Delia suspects her ex-boyfriend was cheating on her. Jennifer wonders if her husband JJ IS cheating on her. Alice dodges mention of her only novel. Gerald III, nicknamed Red, struggles with crippling anxiety (and perhaps emotions he’s trying to keep in the closet). Grant, former cool boy at school, cruises the funeral crowd hoping to score with women.

Nothing hits like family.

Anybody who’s ever had to deal with family members at enforced social gatherings will understand something of the strain the Williams children and grandchildren are suffering. The conversations are on point, their beats believable and you wonder what will happen next. Who will disperse? Who will stay? What scenes will erupt? Will Fred ever be welcome at the Williams home again?

Tune in next week.
