This book follows Shosh and Evan. Shosh is grappling with her mothers death, and the way it is rippling out and affecting the rest of her life. Her dreams of being a part of the theater have been put on hold and she is lashing out at everyone around her in anger when one night she begins hearing a mysterious woman's song. Evan is dealing with his own hardship as his mother is battling cancer, his father refuses to return home to deal with it, and he has become the man of the house, helping to care for his 7 year old brother. Then he begins hearing the same melody, which turns out to be the medium through which both characters see echoes of their past lives together.

I am a sucker for a good romance, and loved the premise of this book. Plus, multi-dimensional stories are very hot right now. I just could not get on-board with the execution of this story. Maybe it's because it's still summer and I am more in the mood for a light read, but it takes a while to actually get into the meat of this story and then the structure of the rest of the book takes some real cognitive heavy lifting to understand. The prose is beautiful and the romance between these two characters is real and deep and believable across all the timelines. I just had to work really hard to understand what was happening all the time, making it a real slog to get through.
