This book really offered a lens into power and what lengths people will go to to get it, and then what having SOME power will drive them to do in order to get more. Our main character, Laure, is having the typical difficulties that are to be expected with being a Black person in a white space, ballet in this instance, and it's especially difficult as they're in France. So when she finds out that there's an ancient catacomb under the city where she can offer up her blood in order to... let's say... up the power of her persuasion, she does just that. And she keeps doing it.

She makes new friends who are in similar situations as she is, and consequentially kind of leaves her old best friend and roommate hanging. Which would be fine, except there's something kind of weird that seems to be going on with her. And then when something tragic happens, Laure is forced to take a step back from everything going on and figure out who she trusts... or else...
