I have never been a ballerina, but I have no doubt about the grim reality of the ballet world’s scathing nature, although this story also seems to speak on our entire social construct.

This book started off as exactly the kind of thing I seek and adore within the horror genre. It takes what is gruesome and horrific in real life and turns it into symbolic terror. I adored the commentary, but quickly found the book drifted into sluggish territory. The complexities I was initially drawn to began to dissipate and I found it difficult to stay engaged with the story. The aspect that should have been suspenseful did little in the way of driving the narrative forward.

Full disclosure: I read exactly 50% of this book. I feel I gave it a fair chance, but after setting it aside, I’ve found I’ve no desire to get back to it. I think the author’s ideas are fantastic, but her execution did not work well for me.
