This book talks about Margaret Jacobsen and how to move on and find happiness again. It’s an inspirational book that you will want to to finish reading in the same day! She goes through heartbreaks, family issues, difficult moments and finds love where she could never imagine. She teaches us how to move on and be happy. It’s a survival novel! One of my favorite phrases of the book is “When you don’t know what to do for yourself, do something for someone else” by Ian’s mother, that helped Margaret see that helping others helps yourself. It’s a must read book! As Nina George said, “If you read just one book this year, read How To Walk Away“.

Margaret Jacobson had a perfect life ahead with her beautiful boyfriend that she loves and her dream job almost guaranteed. Her boyfriend Chip was about to get his pilot license and decided to take her on a ride, even though she is really scared of flying. After saying she didn’t want to go, he finally convinced her to do so. Up there, Chip did what every woman always dreams of: he proposed! On a plane, with his grandma’s ring and a ‘marry me’ sign somewhere on the beach on valentine’s day. That would be the most perfect day of all and of course she said YES! But, they didn’t expect that that night was going to rain! Chip tried his best but he couldn’t stop the plane before it crashed! He didn’t get hurt, but Margaret was stuck in the plane and needed help. The firemen arrived to help her and an explosion happened. They did save her but she got burned really bad in her neck. They took her to the hospital.
Margaret was fine. Her poor neck was burned and her face got some burns as well. But what she didn’t expected was that she couldn’t feel her legs anymore. She had hope. But, one thing was making her more sad: Chip hasn’t come to visit her! Now she has to stay in that hospital for a while, or at least until her insurance covers it. Chip did appear eventually looking like a homeless person! He was feeling bad for what happened to her. And of course it doesn’t justify the fact that he was not visiting her.
Margaret’s sister came to visit her after 2 years living far away with no contact. It was a shock and grateful to see her again. She was there to help and her visit made Margaret feel better in some way. She used to bring her favorite food every night! One day Margaret woke up with Chip’s mom near her, asking for the end of the engagement since Chip was feeling guilty. So that’s when she had her heartbroken. Her loved fiancee left her after everything he had done.
Margaret was going to be forever in a wheelchair. She met Ian, her physical therapist. A Scottish guy hard to understand because of his accent but still too mean and serious. He barely talked to her and she felt bad for having all that silence during the sessions but she had been told that that was how Ian was. After a while, Maggie, how he used to call her, started poking him with questions and talking to him even though he wasn’t responding. Ian finally gave her a smile, an that’s when he started talking, a bit more every time until she fell in love with him. He thought she was just having a bad moment and confused and not actually in love with her. They did kiss once. After that Margaret asked for a new PT, but always looking for Ian during her sessions but he didn’t look back. A couple weeks later, during a valentine’s day party, that wasn’t actually valentine’s day but her sister Kit did it anyway, Ian came to the party and kissed her again. That’s when he got fired and he had to go back to his country.
There’s much more lovely parts in the book, don’t hesitate to read. It’s an amazing book. But anyway. Margaret had to get out of the hospital because of the insurance and went to live in her parent’s house. Family issues came out and heartbreaks occurred around the family. A year later, they got an invitation from Chip’s wedding but Margaret wasn’t invited. It was going to be in Belgium since Chip got promoted even with the crash. They went to the wedding. Not because they wanted to see Chip’s happiness but they had a better thing to do there: help their parents get together after the family issues. it worked out pretty well! Of course Chip saw her and thought that she was there to ruin his life until something really unexpected happened: Ian showed up! But how? He used to follow Kit on Instagram and he saw that they were in Belgium so he traveled there to see her! Lovely story! I cried when I read that! An amazing moment! Did she walk again? Did she have kids? Read ‘How to walk away’ to find it out! I have told you too much 😀
