How to Walk Away is a romance novel that begins with a tragedy.

Margaret is on the verge of having it all: a great job and a marriage proposal is imminent. Then, an accident leaves her without use of her legs.

She’s getting a fair amount of forced cheerfulness when she knows her outlook isn’t great. Then comes Ian, a gruff PT. He’s Scottish so all the reader can think is he’s likely hot. Now, I’ve known some drill sergeant physical therapists in my time and not one of them was Scottish or hot. Assuming they exist.

While HTWA is definitely cheesy, it’s a decent read. Not the first book I’ve read where an accident victim ends up falling in love with a caregiver and they both fight it because rules. Will they live happily ever after or not? You’ll never guess how this one ends.

I’ve seem several reviews where people are pissed because Ian is in a position of power over Margaret. I also know a real life reversal where a female PT married her male patient and I don’t think the issue ever came up that she was abusing her power as his PT. That’s not to say that is for sure not the case in this book but I’m guessing there’s a reason there are rules forbidding it in this book.

I liked that there were a few differentiating details. The novel was utterly predictable however.

One thing I will say: I was glad she found meaning in life and acceptance about her condition. It’s hard to have a plot device like this and half of the book I was reading and muttering about the rights of differently abled. I’m not sure whether the portrayal was sensitively done or not.
