Katherine Center's writing style immediately hooked me. This is written in first person, from Margaret's perspective, and her character is fun to hang out with. The narration is done in a way that's like hanging out with a friend. The excerpt is a gradual build-up to a cliffhanger that made me want to know what happens next.
