I really wanted to like it but every chapter I was reminded of how racism exist and effects Shay and it was overwhelming when I just wanted to get lost in the story. Most Black people do not spend all day thinking about racist events but Shay does. The racism is so in your face and heavily explained instead of showing the reader situation and allowing them to infer things.

The version of the US in this story is just like the US in real life except magic is open in this world. So they brew potions, have flying cars, and got to magical universities.

Shay gets recruited to participate in a musical by a teacher who is head of a scholarship committee which kickstarts a grooming plot which becomes the main focus of this book. Tackling this issue sort of overshadows the magic school to the point where it felt like the magic was unnecessary rather than integral like I prefer it to be in a fantasy series.
