The only thing I liked was the main premise of the story. It was a good idea, but this was not my favorite thing to read. The story was extremely fast-paced and the author just threw you into the book expecting you to have a bunch of prior knowledge. I also felt that the magic system in this book was super cliche. The storyline as a whole was just unoriginal. The next thing I'm going to talk about is the wokeness of this excerpt. I love the representation, but I feel that it wasn't used how it needs to be used. I feel that the author used racism and the fact that she was a black lesbian just to check off those points for their book. The times those themes were brought up were very in-your-face and pretty much just brushed over. I feel that the people who fall under the represented categories would be a bit upset and disappointed in general. I hope as the story goes on, these problems will be solved.
