I liked that we got magic right off the bat and there was actually details about the spell being cast. It felt like I was actually watching Shayna mix potions before my eyes. Right away the dynamic of the school is set up and we get a sense of how it operates.
And I loved the morning breakfast scene with the parents. I really liked the sense of character voice in this because so many YA fantasies lately read alike.
