This chapter sparkles with humor, youthful shenanigans and the seeds of rebellion. Giada clearly chafes under the restrictions set by her parents, teachers and community. Her tender heart for animals is balanced out by sloppiness of dress, hair and manners as a resistance to authority. She’s not a bad girl per se but she’s got trouble following rules that chafe. She’s also envious of her older brother Rocco, whom everybody seems to see as a paragon of virtue and high achievements.

The incident that gets her into trouble in the opening chapter reminds me of a time I rescued animals when I was younger. (This attitude is one indulged by the author, as one might guess from the dedication page.) Any tender-hearted child who ever wanted a pet and tried to sneak one home or keep them in a secluded, private place will understand Giada Bellantuono’s desire.

This novel promises the fulfillment of a child’s dreams as well as the possibility for adventure. The outlining of how this particular magic works as well as the astonishing appearance of a mythical creature sets the bar high for the rest of the novel. I’m sure the author will have wonderful surprises for us as well as her heroine.
