This was a nice opening to the book - we get an understanding of the main character and her goals right off the bat. I also liked that we get a sense of the world-building without it being overwhelming. I was interested in the references to Roman gods. However, I don't read much middle grade fiction, so I wished the sample were longer so that I could get a better understanding of if I was interested in reading more of this book.
