A Bit Confused, But I Guess it Could Be a Good Story?

From what I can tell, "How to Heal Your Gryphon" appears to be a story like the elf from "Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer," i.e. the story of a misfit who learns that their wild interest can actually help their community. I just feel that the protagonist's interests are too close to the expectations of their family. They want to heal still, but just animals as opposed to humans. The conflict appears to be a bit out of proportion to the slight level of deviation. Still, I could see this working out to a decent, if not perfect, middle grade tale.
