There are a lot of heavy topics going on in this book but it’s done in a way that is perfect for the middle graders that it’s aimed at.

On the surface it’s about Ariel, a young girl who thinks the world is a good place until her sister points out all the shadows. Including the ones like Loving vs Virginia that impacts Leah and her boyfriend Raj.

Ariel starts to realize the bullying she goes through because of her religion but it’s not until her sister leaves that she starts to see the world and all of it’s shadows.

Ariel comes into her own as she starts to question what she is told, including that she just needs to work harder. With the help of a teacher who believes in her and encourages her to write poetry we are brought into this world seen through the eyes of an aging child who learns to stand up for herself and what is right.

The right is poetical, partly because of all the poetry in it. It’s written in second person which is rarely seen.
