Solid Middle Grade novel

I'm not the best to review this First Look - I think I'm just not big into Middle Grade novels! The writing feels too simplistic and I want to keep yelling "show, don't tell!" in terms of the writing style. Nevertheless, this story captures an important time in American history, and makes it personal. I think this will be a great book for kids in the target age range.
