I love the genre of historical fiction, and the preview of this novel does not disappoint! The author, Veera Hiranandani, does a great job of describing the characters, plot, setting/era. The main character, Leah, has fallen in love with Raj. Leah is Jewish and Raj is Hindi. This novel takes place in the 60's. The Supreme Court had just ruled on its landmark civil rights decision, Loving versus Virginia. The Court ruled that laws banning interracial marriage violate the Equal Protection and Due Process Clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. So, Leah's family was not open to her relationship with Raj. However, Leah's parents were not exactly stout Jews (i.e., working on the sabbath to keep their bakery profitable, not attending their synagogue on a regular basis, not following a kosher diet, and not sending their children to Hebrew school).

Leah is a product of the 60's. She is questioning her parent's beliefs and is a strong enough young adult to stand up for what she wants and believes in. It will be interesting to see the twists and turns that this novel takes.

I am looking forward to reading the rest of this very interesting novel!
