Really enjoyable coming oof age story.
Amir is Muslim and he’s also gay. He’s not sure how he can be both because he’s sure his family is not going to accept him after they know the truth.
Right before graduating high school, he has one secret relationship with a boy at school. One of the jerks at school takes a picture of Amir kissing the guy and blackmails him. He tries to get Amir to give him thousands of dollars or he’ll tell Amir’s family.
Amir doesn’t have the money. He skips his own graduation and gets on an airplane. He decides that of his parents still love him after they find out the truth, he’ll go home.
But things don’t go according to plan and Amir decides to go to Rome on an absolute whim. It’s probably the best decision he’s made, because he has some life changing experiences in Rome. For the first time, he’s able to be himself. He also makes friends that welcome him with open arms, just as he is.
I loved his adventure.
If it were up to me, I’d remove the store about one character’s piercing incident because that totally grossed me out lol but that’s my only complaint.
Loved Amir, loved his sister, his new friends are great, and his parents are interesting too.
Definitely a good, quick read. Netflix should make this into a movie, it’s prime for the movie treatment.
