I went on so many walks so I could listen to How it All Blew Up by Arvin Ahmadi and it's definitely one of my favorites of 2020. This book immediately hooked me because it's told through four perspectives of the main character and his family in an airport interrogation room. The main character, Amir, runs away to Rome when he is afraid of being outed to his Muslim family. This is part summer adventure story and part complicated family tale. Amir meets a big cast of characters in Rome that help him love and accept himself in a way he hasn't been able to before. This is a quick, engaging read that confronts homophobia and outing. It tackles a lot in a short book. How it All Blew Up is a YA novel that will take you around the world when you have to stay home. It gives you a place to escape and you'll feel like you're right there with Amir. This is a great readalike for fans of Darius the Great is Not Okay and Adam Silvera.
