How It All Blew Up is a fun LGBTQ+ young adult read. The story starts with the main character, Amir, being detained at the airport with his family for causing a disturbance on a flight. The story alternates between all of them talking to the customs people and Amir telling his story of “how it all blew up” and got to this point.
I really enjoyed the LGBTQ+ story mixed with the multicultural perspective. Amir is Iranian and struggling with how his parents will deal with him coming out. The fact that he ran away adds a fun twist to the story, as we see him finding himself while still struggling with his inner feelings of how to be who he wants to be but still have his family, whom he loves. He meets some cool characters that help him come out of his shell and it makes for a fun read. I really enjoyed his sister’s character—as I think that sibling vs parent in the coming out story is pretty accurate. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a fun YA read or who may be or have struggled with becoming who they want to be.
