I zoomed through this heart-warming book. I thought it was going to be more of a romance about a young guy finding love in Rome, which it was, but the love that he finds is for himself, not some hot Italian (though those are present too). Amir's journey of figuring out what it means to be gay and Persian and 18 is told in flashbacks to his time in Rome combined with the testimonies of his family in the Customs interrogation rooms. This unique storytelling builds the suspense of the story, and develops the characters of Amir and his family, in particular his sister.
The pop culture references and debates about what gay culture is also made this a fun read. Overall, this was a sweet book that touched on a variety of cultural issues. I'm glad it exists!
