So the Book starts off with the main character, Amir, giving an account of why he ran away from his family and why he and his family were making a big scene on an airplane. The long and short of why he ran away was because he was being black mailed by a jerk at his high school. The kid wanted $1k, and after he got it then he wanted $3k. and he was blackmailing Amir, with a picture he took of Amir kissing another boy in a parking lot.
The jerk is threatening to show the picture to Amir's family. Amir is especially afraid to come out to his family because he and his family are Islamic and Iranian. And from what Amir has experienced they are rather homophobic.
Amir really tries to get the $3k together by the deadline, but is unable to, and because he cant figure out how to come out to his family and not loose them, he flies to New York. And because of a few things that happen while he is at the New York airport, he on a whim flies to Italy.

What makes this read especially interesting, is how it is told. all of the text are the transcripts of the interrogations of the TSA who pulled the family aside when they were landing in the USA because they had made a massive scene on the plane and were Iranian. It reads like a old detective story, telling the story of what happened, while also giving glimpses into each persons personality.
And also because they are dictations from after the fact the story also in a way is told form the end. And because Amir is still not a full adult (18), the act of running away, the stress, and emotions he has, give the book a feeling of mystery/thriller.

Definitely going to read!
