This is described as Simon vs. The Homosapiens but set in Italy with a few more twists and turns. Now that’s pretty high praise; that raises my expectations quite a bit, given that Simon was and still is one of my favorite books of all time. As a queer teen, I related so much to Simon’s story. I read it when I was still closeted, and it made me feel incredibly seen. I even came out to one of my best friends after we went and saw the movie adaptation of it. So like I said, this book has to be pretty damn good if it’s being compared to Simon.

One of the reasons Simon was so strong for me was because of the voice. Becky Albertalli has a real knack for creating unique, recognizable, and strong voice for each of her characters. And from what I’ve read so far, this author also shares some of that talent. Not only that, but the premise is incredibly engaging. A diverse and inclusive contemporary set overseas in Europe with both thrilling elements and moments that pull at your heartstrings? AND featuring a gay POC narrator who has to struggle with his sexuality and religion? I think we all need a book like that in our lives.

Although diversity is growing, we still need more in YA, always. The fact that this book addresses so many identities: queer, Muslim, POC, is what’s going to make it special. I have no doubt it will speak to so many people. It’s so important books like this are written. Everyone deserves to see themselves in stories, and I believe this one will give many that chance.
