It seems like fantasy books tend to fall into two categories: the ones that give the reader a really detailed explanation of the magic, and the ones that basically just put it out there and then build the plot with the assumption that the reader will be on board. This book definitely falls into the second category, but that was not a problem for me. There was a lot of action, I loved the descriptions of the opulent setting, and I enjoyed the character development. Quell is a strong protagonist, which I always like to see. One minor complaint is that I felt like the romance between Quell and Jordan needed a better foundation for the reader to really get invested in it, and frankly to believe that they were that invested in each other. I wasn't really buying the chemistry there. I definitely did not see the end coming and I would love to read more!
