When I read the first few pages of this book as part of a preview, I felt from the jump that everything about it would be romantic - the writing, the world building, the magic system. It did not disappoint! All of the little details in this world are so lush and thought out. The magic system in particular is so interesting and I can't wait to discover more as the series continues.
What I wasn't ready for were the twists! Like a master of the craft, J. Elle has twists that are satisfying because you could see them coming and she's got some major ones that hit you over the side of the head. I'm still reeling from one of the reveals. Can't say more than that!
The one element that had to grow on me from the preview was the point of view character Yagrin. In the earlier pages of thbooks, I struggled to connect with him and wanted to just get back to the main story. But man oh man, am I glad he was there! His point of view provides such insight into the mysteries at the heart of the book and I found myself drawn to his chapters as the story went on.
Can't wait for book 2!!!
