OK as someone who struggles with heavy world building I appreciated the specialties breakdown that the beginning of the book. It gives a nice peek into what to expect and helps the story make sense.

First we meet Yagrin who's reluctantly on a mission to defend the secrecy of his way of life by killing a young woman who seems to be just an average Jane.

Then part one begins and we meet Quell. She and her mom have been bouncing from place to place and she has a dream of staying put for a change, but not in New Orleans where they currently are.

Unfortunately for Quell she sees something she shouldn't.
