The beginning chapters of YA novels, especially fantasy ones, are tasked with introducing the world and its characters, keeping the reader interested enough to continue on. While I did find this beginning section a little confusing, J. Elle's writing style in other books hasn't fully jived with me either, I believe it did a good job keeping the intrigue high and readers will be itching to see what happens next.
