So far, prologue and three chapters in, this is really well written and makes me want to finish it, right now!

So far Ms. Sutherland teases with hints of magic, mystery, and quirky dark humor. The setting is contemporary, a single parent with three gifted children, the Hollow sisters, now young adults: Iris still in school and sorting out the world, Grey a bewitching (literally) fashion designer with demonstrated magical skills, and middle sister Vivi a musician with a punk-ish outlook. Their collective history is shrouded, so far; Dad died in an unexplained manner, and simultaneously SOMETHING happened to the Hollow sisters, the three went missing and returned with their dark hair turned white, blue eyes gone black, becoming tall, clever, bright & possibly elfin adults. Their story is famous, but the details obscure. A druid-like figure lurks at the edge of vision, meaning, what? We must read on to find the magic to come.

Ms. Sutherland writes sinuously, weaving Iris' story with superb prose and clever expressions that made me think, e.g. "Cate gave a short, complicated laugh..." I'd never heard that turn of phrase, and I had to work to imagine it. What would you make of it? Garrulous but disbelieving? Hopeful but fearful?

Anyway, I liked it and hope to find more in later chapters.
