The stunning cover of HOUSE OF HOLLOW by Krystal Sutherland kept catching my eye. After hearing a few great reviews, I had to pick up a copy!
HOUSE OF HOLLOW tells the story of three sisters, told from the perspective of the youngest, seventeen year old Iris. When she and her sisters were little, they disappeared for a while. None of them remember the time before they were returned, naked but unhurt apart from matching scars on their throats. Since then the sisters have always been a little bit different, even in the eyes of their parents.
Iris’ older sisters have moved away, cutting off most contact with their mother. When Grey, the oldest sister, goes missing, Iris and middle sister Vivi must try to find out what has happened to her. It is soon clear that something outside of the norm has happened and secrets from their past will come back into play.
The story relies heavily on body horror. and it has some very dark content for a YA read. Trigger warnings for suicide, child death and gore.
This is another book that is largely summed up by “weird”, but in the best possible way. I loved the mystery around the three sisters and the close bond between them even as they are far apart. With their parents suspecting something strange has happened involving their disappearance and reappearance, the sisters are a unit unto themselves. Strange things keep happening around them and strange abilities form as well, even as their phsyical forms shift after their reappearance as well.
The author does an amazing job of building up the creepy atmosphere in a very descriptive manner that had me hooked and feeling the eerie vibes! I am very glad that I picked this one up. It was a perfect read for spooky season!
