Gorgeous writing and imagery, exceptional premise, I am in awe of this dark modern fairytale!
Wow! I haven’t been this excited about a book in a very long time. First off, the cover of this book is astoundingly beautiful, possibly the best cover I’ve ever seen! I love how the flowers drape across the girl’s face in an ominous, mysterious way. It seems to be foreshadowing the dangerous, secretive nature of the story and is exactly the type of book cover that pulls you in immediately and leaves you wanting more. In terms of the first look, it is written exceptionally well. Sutherland introduces a unique, intricate tale that is gripping in a hauntingly beautiful kind of way. Iris Hollow, our heroine, and her sisters, Grey and Vivi, each have an identical half-moon scar located at the base of their throats, but they can’t seem to remember how exactly it got there. When Grey goes missing, Iris retraces her sister’s footsteps in hopes of finding her, and, in doing so, becomes increasingly closer to discovering the truth about what really happened to the sisters during childhood.
This seems to be much darker than your average YA novel, which is a HUGE plus. I’m always searching for a book that is ‘different’ and goes against the grain - this seems to fit that bill to a tee. I love how original the plot is, and that it presents a modern take on a fairy tale. I cannot wait to further explore the character development of Iris, Grey, and Vivi, as well as follow them along on their haunting journey.
All in all, I am absolutely in awe of this first look. These first few pages are mesmerizing, extremely detailed, and full of gorgeous imagery that seems to jump right off of the page. This first look fully captivated my attention and has made House of Hollow one of my most-anticipated 2021 releases. Sutherland has managed to craft an unbelievably unique, beguiling story that makes me feel like I am being immersed in some type of beautiful nightmare, and I’ve only read the beginning! I CANNOT WAIT to get my hands on this book and can already tell that it will not disappoint. I will for sure be telling all of my friends about this one :)
