I found the concept of the book incredibly intriguing as well as the concept of the hotel, how it moved, why it moved, how the maitre'd oppressed and used the actual magic users in the hotel. However, the execution felt clumsy at times. Additionally, the stakes of the book did not become clear or ramp up at all until nearly 65-70% of the book had already passed, far too deep into the book to expect a reader to read before becoming invested in the story and the characters, if the reader could because the protagonist acts in ways that run contrary to her own stated motives. Overall, I found this book good but not great. (I should have known that I might not appreciate the book if I had checked my review of The Night Circus, a title that it is frequently compared to.) Quite frankly, I'm surprised that I have still held onto this book and have not unhauled it.
