If you enjoyed The Night Circus, Hotel Magnifique is a perfect read for you. I loved the magic that Taylor created - both the magic in the story and the magic of the story. Everything is just believable enough, and the journeys of the hotel to breathtaking places, that even knowing something bad is brewing under the surface doesn't stop the reader from wanting to check into the Hotel Magnifique. And something bad is definitely brewing. It doesn't take long for the fantasy veneer that attracted Jani and her sister Zosa to wear off for Jani. Separated from her sister and not quite blending in with the other staff, Jani begins to unravel the mystery of the magic and the true motivations of the maitre that runs the hotel. Finding friends within the hotel in unexpected places, Jani learns something about herself while putting together an audacious plot that will reunite her with her sister and free the rest of the staff from their contracts. In comparing this to The Night Circus, Hotel Magnifique starts with a similar premise for an atmospheric story, but for me it draws out an even better plot for how suminaires (magicians) are connected to the hotel, and why despite being as enchanting as it is, the hotel is essentially a curse that needs to be broken. In a world full of magic, Jani is a stubborn and determined girl that is using her very practical brain to save her sister and her friends - and isn't the power of love and friendship the most magical thing of all? I loved this book!
