The start of this book begins with a passage from a seemingly contemporary world which believes in no magic or mystery. After a brief scene, you're thrust into world which contrasts it, almost to the point of being its' antithesis. A world that accepts magic as fact and is wary of it--accept at the Hotel Magnifique, a mysterious hotel only the most elite get an invitation to. Even so, those elite sign a contract so they can't remember what took place during their time there. This world still somehow seems familiar, like Old World Europe, although it is a fictional world.

Two sisters, thirteen and seventeen, are the main characters in this story. Having lost their parents, they are on their own in an uncaring city having fallen to the lower classes of society. Both are innocent, but both have strong personalities and persevere to make a better life. Through grit, smart and talents they get hired at this mysterious hotel and we are supposed to learn about the hotel with them. Unfortunately, as these questions begin to be answered, the preview passage ends and leaves you wanting more.
