Taylor’s prose is absorbing and convincingly builds a believable world of magic, without being heavy-handed with the worldbuilding and information dumping. The setting has echoes of French culture, while also feeling quite new and unique. The cast of characters are dynamic, complex, and interesting, from the main characters to the side characters. I felt myself growing more and more invested in what would happen to the sisters throughout the story, which is a sign of effective storytelling for sure. While the setting is enrapturing at first, you quickly grow to feel the urgency and to hope that the sisters can safely free themselves from the snare of the hotel.
