This reminds me of THE NIGHT CIRCUS, which is probably intentional, but unfortunate for me. I really didn't enjoy that story or world, and this one seems to be going the same way. I just get the sense that there won't be much original that catches me in this story. I'm also deeply uninterested in the setting which is a big turn off for me.
