I finished this book 'sometime around midnight.' I really enjoyed the writing style. Mikel Jollett is able to express his memories without using a reflective voice. The first chapters are written from a child's perspective and are so well done and so deep. He was able to summon up his childhood memories through the innocent eyes of a child letting you truly understand that moment in time. This book was a rollercoaster of emotions for me. I related so much, and thought so much, and cried so much. I kept wanting to turn back time and swoop in to protect him. So much of this story is burned into me. This book will stay with you long after you finish reading it. The metaphors he uses to help you understand what he is feeling are perfect and powerful. This story asks what does it mean to be a man? How do you grow up without a parent's guidance or support? How did the synanon cult affect the children who grew up there? This is not a book I would of picked up on my own but I am so thankful I received an early copy to read. This book is worth the read even if it's not the genre you typically go for. Seriously what are you waiting for? Get this book!
