Mikel Jollett's journey from growing up in a cult to successful musician and writer is unbelievable and inspiring. He went through so many obstacles and had so much going against him from birth that it is amazing he was able to persevere and make something of himself. It was intriguing and so sad reading about what happened at the Synanon commune and how the children were essentially left parentless. The effects from growing up with the trauma is well documented in this memoir. Everything from mental health issues, addiction, poverty, abuse, and unhealthy relationships is covered and gives hope to those going through tough times. Mikel was able to overcome it all and find the happiness that he deserves.
