Has a book ever been so moving that when it ends, you feel as though you left a piece of yourself with it? That’s Hollywood Park.

Hollywood Park is powerful, inspiring, and beautifully poetic.

Mikel Jollett’s story is one of a child navigating the ways of life outside of a cult in which he spent the first five years of his life. It is the story of survival. Survival of depression, alcoholism, poverty, emotional abuse, addiction, and more.

His memoir had me wanting to cry tears of sorrow one minute and tears of joy the next. When he failed, I failed. When he succeeded, I was bursting with pride.

The story is told from a child perspective, which changes as Mikel grows. This was a brilliant writing technique because it created a developing plot, something I think a lot of memoirs lack.

Rather than bounce from one anecdote to the next, Hollywood Park tells a story, allowing the reader to grow alongside Mikel. It’s wonderful.

I applaud this work and happily give Hollywood Park 5 stars.
