Mark your calendar for May 5, when Mikel Jollett's absolutely electric memoir hits the shelves. It has been a while since a memoir caught me so entirely- Jollett's story, as fascinating as it is, is also haunting as it details the trauma and abuse of his youth. The book opens with Jollett's mother escaping the Synanon cult with Mikel and his brother, and his from that point on with his mother is so hard to read at points as she inflicts and enables more abuse and neglect. I was heartened every time he was able to be with his father and stepmother, and reading through his story up until now with his long road to success with his band, The Airborne Toxic Event, was a well told story of an almost unimaginable life. The last time a memoir hit me this much was Educated- and I'm wishing for this book just as much success as that has had.
