This was incredible! Easily one of the best memoirs I've ever read. Which just goes to show you don't need to be familiar with the author to be affected by a memoir.

Jollett's writing is incredible. The book starts when he is a very young child and the writing reflects the limited view of a 5 year old. We don't know what is going on because our young narrator doesn't understand what is happening to him. It's only later, as Mikel ages and becomes more aware of himself and his situation, that we the reader get more insight. I was blown away by how he was able to describe deep, complex emotions so perfectly. The whole book reads more like song lyrics than prose. You can tell he put a lot of thought, emotion, and passion into this project.

Highly recommend!
