I first became excited about this book when hearing it was about a cult. The book definitely had parts that focused on the cult, but the majority of the book is all about how the early years of your life can have a major effect on your life.

This book has a unique aspect of having a male voice tell the story. The book was tough to read at times, but the author wrote it with such an introspective viewpoint. He discusses his traumatic childhood that included poverty, abuse, addiction, and family issues. He had so many things stack against him.

I really enjoyed reading a book told by a young child, teenager, and then adult. You really get the feeling of growth from the character. Overall, the book left a lasting impact on me.
