This is the open hearted story of a boy who was born in the Synanon cult and escaped with his mother and brother about 5 years later. He tells us about the struggles his family went through in the life outside, including poverty, addiction, and mental illness.
I felt like this book was in large part a dedication to the relationship Mikel had with his father and his way of processing the grief and anger he felt through his life because of his childhood.
It was very interesting to learn about his family difficulties, as it seems many who left this particular cult go through the same. I would have liked to learn more about life inside the cult and the events prior to leaving.
But overall this is a hopeful memoir and I would recommend it!
