From start to finish, I could hardly put this memoir down. It starts with a bang: a young Mikel Jollett is awoken in the middle of the night by his mother to flee their home in the Synanon cult where Mikel and his bother were taken from their parents at just six months old.

We follow Mikel's journey through childhood and early adulthood. Beautifully told stories of abuse, love, betrayal, rebellion, addiction, triumph, and resilience, the tone of the book shifting as Mikel grows older, his understanding of the world more mature.

I was in love throughout but it was the final 60 pages that moved Hollywood Park onto my list of favorite memoirs. I've read a ton of them and this is one hell of a satisfying read.
