Hollywood Park by Mikel Jollett thanks to @bookishfirst and @celadonbooks for the ARC ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Mikel is the frontman of the band Airborne Toxic Event, and as you may imagine most rockstars can probably write pretty engrossing memoirs. This book is so much more. He escaped from a famous cult as a child, dealt with mental health issues and addiction in his family, and bounced back and forth between homes throughout his childhood trying to hide from past cult members.

I’ll start by saying this was the best memoir I’ve ever read. I’m not a huge memoir fan because I like excitement, action, twisting storylines... real life doesn’t usually cut it. This story was so powerful. It had so many different aspects to it that came together and not a single moment of it was dull. As a reader, you hear his voice mature and grow as he ages and begins to understand the world around him and his past. His family life was so interesting, with so many different components. I highly recommend this book for everyone, regardless of whether you are a memoir fan or not.

“We weirdos and orphans out on empty highways among the pines and weary travelers, the men in their lipsticks keeping us company as they sing their dad songs on the radio.”
