Jollett's Hollywood Park is a beautifully written memoir of an unusual life. Jollett's childhood was turbulent and chaotic from the time of his birth into a cult, through escape from the cult and the subsequent dangers, to the ongoing instability of his family life. With a mentally ill mother, divorced parents, several step-fathers, and a family riddled with addiction and abuse, Jollett faced many challenges. One unique aspect of this memoir is that the point of view changes as he grows - rather than writing through an adult lens, there is an immediacy to his confusion over what a family unit was (or should be) as a small child to his adolescent rage. His writing is typically crystallized and clear, though he does rely on too many metaphors in the final chapters. Overall, a gripping memoir of an extraordinary life and man.
